In the Philippines, sabong (cockfight) is more than just a pastime among inveterate gamblers. Sabong is deeply entrenched in the Philippine culture with sabungeros estimated at about eight to 10 million Filipinos, or roughly 10 percent of the total population. Such consuming passion for sabong has also spawned a P50-billion industry, with the gamefowl-breeding sector spurring demand for feeds, vitamins, and facilities especially designed for fighting cocks.

In Masbate, depending on where the fiesta (religious celebration) is held, there is cockfighting event called "Derby" and on regular days it happen every Saturdays or Sundays. People from different towns and baranggays meet and bet on their choosen cocks.

History of Rodeo Masbateño

Concieved by MAKUSOG - an association of masbate professionals and business leaders as early as 1992 and brought to realization by the former Governor of Masbate, Emilio R. Espinosa, Jr. now Congressman and Deputy Speaker for Luzon, RODEO MASBATEÑO started in 1993 as the modest tribute to the province´s cattle farmers, cowhands, cowboys and the thousands of families who directly or indirectly depend on the local industry for a living.

It aims primarily to set its imprints as distinctly Masbateño - to fit the bond of association between the word Rodeo and the province.

At the time it was concieved, the local cattle industry was ailing and the provincial goverment, as well as the cattle producers fet the need for the intervention of the national goverment. The launching of Rodeo Masbate was to boast the industry and to make the Masbateños aware of its potential for the province´s development as a cattle country.

The much needed help was to be a blessing in many ways and the Rodeo was elevated into a national event and has attracted participants from all over the country and abroad.

The succeeding Rodeo opened new doors for the province´s development in trade and tourism. It proved to be a success as a crowd drawer and investors from as far as manila, Laguna, Batangas, Cebu , Mainland Bicol and mindanao opened other opportunities for their trade and showcase their products as well. At one time the Rodeo was named RODEO FILIPINO. Masbateño however preferred to use the name RODEO MASBATEÑO instead of RODEO FILIPINO for sentimental reasons.

A permanent rodeo site was established and the Rodeo Masbateño, inc. was formed to handle the annual event headed by Congressman Espinosa, a Board of Trustee and Incorporators to handle theyearly event. This was registered with the Commision.

To those coming from other places, spectators or participants and the Masbateños themselves who might have been away from the province for some time, Rodeo Masbateño may yet prove an "eye-opener& for varied investments they may wish to prospect. The rich resources of the province, in addition to the cattle industry, may yet be an avenue for business. Thanks to the present administration of Governor Antonio T. Kho who continue to support this yearly event and the continued patronage of well-meaning Masbateños. RODEO MASBATEÑO is here to stay.

To the thousands of Masbateños who take pride in living in this "Cattle Country" the yearly Rodeo event is a celebration of life - a life of grace from the Lord.
